LIVE GIG REVIEW: VAMPIRE WEEKEND - ACADEMY 2, MANCHESTER - 01/06/08

With the sunlight leaking in through the slightly parted blackout curtains and the barely pubescent band on the stage you could be mistaken for thinking it was an end of school year concert. However, it wasn’t; it was a beautiful Sunday summer evening, and I had a pint in my hand so it must’ve been a gig.

A cheer of both excitement and relief greeted Vampire Weekend as they took to the stage. Two cancelled Manchester shows had left many of the audience and myself waiting since February to see them live. The show kicked off with ‘Mansard Roof' but unlike the album, the Casio-sounding drums are replaced by the real thing. This instantly gives the sound more urgency and the chorus much more energy.

More bounce was applied to much of the set and the enjoyment of this does highlight how painfully short songs like ‘A Punk’ are. On record it’s a short, sharp song, but live I could sing and dance to the ‘Oi, Oi Oi’s’ all day. Unapologetic enthusiasm from the band and silly but perfect sing-a-long choruses like ‘Blake’s Got a New Face’ or the seemingly random ‘wowwww’ of ‘M79‘ (the happiest song ever written about a bus) make the Vampire Weekend live experience such a joyous one.

Like many of their songs the set was all too brief. Singer Koenig apologised for the band not having more material to play and assured the crowd that they were working on it. I hope they get the time to do it, because I can see Vampire Weekend being the band of the summer and therefore being in constant demand. The mouth-watering prospect of sunshine, Strawberry Cider and Vampire Weekend at the summer’s festivals are perfect.

If they could add a cover of ‘Call Me Al’ to their set then I’ll probably die of shear elation.

4/5

An enthusiastic band combined with sing-a-long choruses resulted in the perfect warm up for the summer’s festivals.

PICCADILLY RECORDS – RECOMMENDED ALBUMS
(W/C 26/05/08)

B12 : Last Days Of Silence
B12

Some 12 years since the classic "Time Tourist" album (Warp), the rightful follow-up to their critically acclaimed and landmark first LP "Electro Soma" (also on Warp), the recently re-launched B12 are back as both label and seminal electronic act. The duo, Mike Golding and Steve Rutter, bring us this album consisting of new previously unreleased material, tracks only ever heard at their live gigs and music only previously available on limited edition vinyl. From the warm and moody "Ashamed of Me" to the far eastern tinged strings on "Hall Of Mirrors", echoic deep bass on the break infected "Magnetic Fields" and dancefloor groove of current single "32 Lineup" the pair combine the classic B12 sounds into a new vision of the future. The CD also features a bonus disc of unreleased live recordings.

The Black Angels : Directions To See A Ghost
Light In The Attic

Last time we met The Black Angels, they were staring into the desert sun somewhere outside of Austin, Texas. Two years later, night has fallen and the spirits have come out. It's time for The Black Angels to provide "Directions On How To See A Ghost". If you're familiar with "Passover", the band's 2006 debut, you'll know that The Black Angels's music alone is enough to invoke spirits. There's a name for the band's sound; they call it 'hypno-drone 'n roll'. It's the sound of long nights on peyote, of dreams of a new world order, and of half-invented memories of the seamy side of 60s psychedelia. While the Iraq war is still a major influence on the band's lyrics, there are new forces at work here, including Eugene Zamyatin's dystopian novel 'We' and – in Christian Bland's words – 'psychic information from the past and future.'

Blacksand : Barn
Asusu

Producer and classically trained multi-instrumentalist Nick Franglen is one half of Lemon Jelly who, since 1997, have sold half a million albums around the world. Charles Casey is a founder member of Akasha, the original, tripped-out purveyors of noirish jazzadelica, and as an in-demand musician, he has played and toured with Neneh Cherry, David Axelrod, The Divine Comedy and Lemon Jelly. All of which will provide very few clues as to the sound they have been creating together as Blacksand since November 2006. Equipped with guitars, a phalanx of effects pedals, looping, delay and distortion boxes, and an array of new and old amplifiers, the improvised musical dialogue they manipulate and sometimes struggle to control is a complex, multi-layered sound that ranges from sparkling acoustica to throbbing electronic maelstrom. While guitars are the only instruments played, they don't always sound like guitars and are scraped, tapped, scratched and pinged to provide sounds for an endless stream of effects that are manipulated, looped and distorted into oblivion. Improvised and unpredictable, no one Blacksand performance can ever be repeated, and their tracks are recorded live with no overdubs. "Barn" is their incredible debut release, issued as a hand-numbered limited edition of 1000 copies, stunningly packaged in fold-out seeve designed by Chris Bigg and Vaughan Oliver at v23.

July Skies : The Weather Clock
Make Mine Music

"The Weather Clock" is July Skies 4th album and the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2004 album "The English Cold". Musically, think The Durutti Column, the sensitivity of 80s indie bands like The House of Love, the guitar work of Maurice Deebank (Felt) or Robin Gutherie (Cocteau Twins), Harold Budd, or even a modern reference to British Sea Power if they 'didn't like rock music'. "The Weather Clock" is inspired by a lost post-war Mid-20th Century Britain and a fixation with the design and architecture of the period.

Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra : Miles Of Styles
Ubiquity

"Miles Of Styles" is the soundtrack to places Lee has been, and would like to visit, and was made using instruments he's picked up along the way. As with his previous cinematic-style albums, "Miles Of Styles" is intended to take the listener on a journey, even if they're just on the bus home after work. So, on the first side of the album, we start off in the Punjab ("Punjabi Lullaby"), then jet off to Brazil ("Brazilian Bubble", come back to "Great Russell Street", and then head off to Nigeria ("Lagos Calling"). There's also reggae ("Mela D"), plenty of easy listening and cinematica ("Bathtub Dub", "Mystery Train", "Heist In Helsinki", "Prague Rock", "Dinosaur Island", "Italy 73"), some swinging grooves too ("Parian Glam Slam", "Tokyo Dancer"). As ever, Mr Lee comes at the tracks from a library music perspective, so the quality (and quantity) is really high, each one encapsulating a theme, style, journey or sound with total perfection.

Nobody Presents : Blank Blue - Western Water Music Vol II
Ubiquity

Five years on from his debut album for Ubiquity, and following releases on Plug Research and with the Mystic Chords Of Memory, plus extensive touring with the likes Prefuse 73, Battles, Edan, Dntel and Flying Lotus, Elvin Estela is back with a brilliant new Nobody long player. "Blank Blue" is another example of the strength of the current wave of beat music created in Los Angeles. The sound is undoubtedly influenced by the late hip hop producer James 'J Dilla' Yancey, but with the tracks wrapped in a distinctive dreamy sun-drenched LA psychedelia. With "Blank Blue", Estela sought out a sound that keeps the sensibility of Low End Theory while structuring tracks into songs with full vocals and instrumentation. A delicious summer offering.

Our Sleepless Forest : Our Sleepless Forest
Resonant

Absolutely stunning debut album of ambient electronic space rock from a frighteningly young three-piece from South London - their first full release, having had an early version of album track "The Tinderbox" included on the Type Records "Free The Future" compilation. Having met at school, Sam Purcell, Josh Rothberger and Karl Jawara started experimenting with various musical instruments and sounds using software and basic recording equipment, inspired by the music they were into and with the aim of creating their own wall of sound. After 14 months they emerged with something they were sufficiently happy with to allow it to be heard by others, and ultimately that brings us to the present day - an eight-track, 45-minute debut that is comparable to any in this field in recent times. Our Sleepless Forest's music is multi-layered, complex and dense, yet dedication and attention are rewarded as the intricate slow-build melodies are revealed beneath the feedback, crackle and hiss. Reminiscent at times of the likes of Loscil or even Radiohead's more out-there moments but on the whole avoiding the predictable comparisons associated with music of this genre, this is an album that simply has to be heard.

Spiritualized : Songs In A & E
Sanctuary

Jason Spaceman is back with his sixth studio outing under the Spiritualized banner, "Songs In A & E", a record that has consumed its creator's life even more than any of its predecessors. It has all the flow of previous Spiritualized classics, only here there is no hiding behind studio effects, or screaming tornados of guitar feedback. As Jason says, 'There's is no need to over-complicate things, to be wilfully strange in music. These songs are simple in their construction, but they're honest' The result, then, is a record true to Jason's original tenet of simplicity, but completely unlike any of his others, thanks to its naked, unelaborated sound.

Vetiver : Thing Of The Past
Fat Cat

A set of cover versions of songs by some of bandleader Andy Cabic's favourite artists, the album offers a joyful and intriguing insight into some of the music that has inspired and informed the band, whilst remaking the songs very much in their own image and existing as a stunning and coherent opus in its own right. Andy wanted to share songs which were favourites of his and his circle of friends, and perform them with a reverence and appreciation for their finer qualities; the lyrical and sonic nuances which keep him returning to them time and again for inspiration. The album includes contributions from two of Andy's heroes, Vashti Bunyan (who duets on "Sleep A Million Years") and Michael Hurley (who does likewise on his own "Blue Driver").

LIVE GIG REVIEW: THE WHIP / SOUTH CENTRAL - ACADEMY 3, MANCHESTER - 22/05/08

As a general rule, I don’t trust any band with a keytar. So my expectations were instantly lowered the second South Central took to the stage. These expectations were all but slaughtered the second the lead man spoke into his microphone and revealed an all too showy, unnecessary and annoying effects pedal. Repeating the last syllable of the sentence ‘Alright facking Manchester, ter, ter, ter’ does not whip me up into an expectant dance-ready frenzy, as I’m sure these boys were hoping. It just makes me say, ‘Christ, here we go’.

The baggy influenced songs lacked any kind of structure or point and the lead man hid behind an aggressive persona and the aforementioned effects pedal. Adding distortion and a couple of BPM to a formula the Happy Mondays discovered twenty years ago does not make for the ‘experimental’ tag their Myspace claims. In conclusion, if I wanted to hear cockneys reverberate, I’d live in a tin box in Hackney.

Everything South Central lack, The Whip has in abundance. When I first saw them just over a year ago they were an already solid and tight live act. Since then they’ve relentlessly toured and now I think you’ll be hard pushed to discover a better live band. Despite this seemingly endless touring, there’s still a clear enthusiasm for playing and entertaining from the band. Beginning their set with Sister Siam, the strongest song on their debut album, ‘X Marks Destination’, was a risky move as it set a very high benchmark. The band responded to this self imposed challenge in the best possible fashion; building on the momentum of each song until they had a festival-ready continuous twenty minute mix of old and new material.

The Whip make you believe you are an integral part of the band, willing your participation. This begins a seemingly endless cycle; the better the band play the more the audience responds, the more response from the audience the more the band gives, onwards until there’s not a static person in the entire room.

SUMMARY

4/5

The Whip make you believe you are an integral part of the band and you’d be hard pushed to find a better live act.

PICCADILLY RECORDS – RECOMMENDED ALBUMS
(W/C 19/05/08)

Bonnie Prince Billy : Lie Down In The Light
Domino

"Lie Down In The Light" is the ninth Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album, and his first proper album release since 2006's "The Letting Go". It is the brightest album to date from the Bonnie 'Prince'. Brisk tempos skip among his signature slower numbers and ballads. Bonnie's vocals are among his most expressive: carefully nuanced, singing all up and down his range, showing him at a judiciously dynamic and tuneful apex. The album features Bonnie repeat players Paul Oldham and Emmett Kelly and also benefits from the multi-instrumental presence of Shahzad Izmaily, who works percussion, piano, guitar, banjo and the mysterious, sensual 'row of wrenches'. New (duet) partner Ashley Webber forges her own presence next to Bonnie in a pair of fantastic turns. Additionally, some of Nashville's finest appear in between the band's strings and harrows, adding light (and yeah, we see a little darkness too) wherever they appear.

Bumblebeez : Prince Umberto And The Sister Of Ill
Modular

Full of tracks intent on getting any dancefloor amped up, "Prince Umberto And The Sister Of Ill" is sure to find a home on your CD player or CDJ decks. From current single "Rio" - an ode to carnival central - to "Club Club", which sounds like a chance meeting between Daft Punk and a female fronted Beastie Boys (in the form of little sis Pia) and big bad bass lines of "Coming For Ya Loneliness", which features UK Grime sensation NoLay, there's something for clubs and homes of all persuasions. Produced by self confessed 'ADD' producer Chris Colonna and SMD man James Ford, the album trawls through varying beats and obvious nods to the Bumblebeez musical influences. While "Freak Ya Loneliness" sees Chris tilting his hat to Beck and The Dandy Warhols, tracks like "Radio Fabulous" with their random sampling are clearly influenced by hip hop legends De La Soul. Morphing between obscure styles and a multitude of genres on the 16 track album the Bumblebeez will blaze a path all of their own with the debut long player this year.

Congregation : Congregation
Bronzerat

Debut album from London new-blues duo discovered by Duke Spirit and Bronzerat (discoverers of Seasick Steve). Taking roots music and injecting it with modern class and soul. This is their first album, and already excitement abounds. It features the fantastic voice of Victoria Yeulet, whose fans include Leila Moss and Holly Golightly. Ben Prosser, the other one, is the critically acclaimed frontman of The Tap Collective. Highly recommended!!!!!

El Perro Del Mar : From The Valley To The Stars
Memphis Industries

El Perro Del Mar is the alter ego of Sarah Assbring. Her second album is an opus, chock full of non-traditional folk songs that explore the world at large. She's joined at times on the record by members of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphonic Choir.

The Horror The Horror : Wired Boy Child
Tapete

"Wired Boy Child" is The Horror The Horror's second album, following up their debut album which was heralded for its punchy and energetic sound and dozens of instant indie pop classics. "Wired Boy Child" features two telecaster, fuzzy bass, drums and upfront lead vocals as before but with a more melancholic twist. Songs like "It Was Everything, Everything!" or "Milky White" definitely feature more minor chords than the band's debut. Where most bands fall way too short on their second albums, The Horror The Horror have come up with the goods this time.

Myspace: www.myspace.com/thth

Scarlett Johansson : Anywhere I Lay My Head
Atco

"Anywhere I Lay My Head" features Scarlett's distinctive vocal interpretations of ten songs by legendary singer-songwriter Tom Waits. It also introduces one original track, "Song For Jo," which she co-wrote with David Andrew Sitek (TV On the Radio), who produced the album and lent his instrumental skills throughout. The title track comes from Waits' 1985 opus "Rain Dogs", and Johansson's set also pulls cuts from "Alice", "Swordfishtrombones", "Big Time", "Orphans", "Real Gone", "Small Change" and "Bone Machine". David Bowie adds backing vocals on two tracks, "Falling Down" and "Fannin Street" and the disc also features the talents of Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner and multi-instrumentalist Sean Antanaitis from Celebration, among others.

Liquid Liquid : Slip In And Out Of Phenomenon
Domino

Domino Records deliver a comprehensive retrospective of seminal New York punk-funk band Liquid Liquid. Featuring Scott Hartley, Richard McGuire, Salvatore Principato and Dennis Young, Liquid Liquid released a series of influential EPs on the legendary 99 Records label from 1981 - 1985. Orbiting around a core configuration of drums, bass, marimba and percussion, Sal Principato's voice incanted and chanted. As well as an intensity to the grooves that is very much of its time - you can hear the group reaching for every note and beat – Liquid Liquid were locked together by a sticky looseness that is as head-noddingly infectious now as it must have been desirously strange at the time. The classic EPs are included here amongst four long lost studio recordings and eight live tracks.

Padded Cell : Night Must Fall
DC Recordings

Richard Sen And Neil Beatnik's Padded Cell has been the focus of growing speculation for some time now. After achieving individual notoriety as a Bronx Dogs and a Dirty Beatniks respectively, "Take U Down" and their triptych of 12" releases for DC Recordings has left nocturnal creatures everywhere drooling with desire for a full-length glimpse into the Padded Cell. Finally it is here! Drawing inspiration from bands as diverse as Goblin, The Velvet Underground, Arthur Russell, Material, Bush Tetras, and Carl Craig, this duo's analogue fetishism is here augmented by an impressive list of collaborators: Dennis Young (Liquid Liquid) plays percussion and marimba, Chloe Battant from London punk funk band Battant (Kill The DJ) delivers vocals; guitars and synths come from sonic necromancer Giallos Flame (Analogue Screams / DC Recordings), and Italian producers The Diaphanoids (Bearfunk) deliver strings, synths and vocals.

The Ting Tings : We Started Nothing
Columbia

"We Started Nothing" is the debut album from The Ting Tings. A deliriously appealing mix of Go-Gos beat pop, clubbier beats and Katie's grippingly rankled vocal delivery The Ting Tings fashioned their entire album in six weeks at The Mill. It's a rollercoaster mash up of energy, anger and pure pop arousal. 'There's nothing wrong with people getting it the first time they hear it', says Jules, 'In fact, that's what we want, if we could say there was anything like an intention behind this.' If there's a loose thread to the songs it is about Katie being very pissed off indeed, but this isn't angsty teen poetry. It's about being heard just for the fun of it. "That's Not My Name", "Fruit Machine" and "Great DJ" share a unique women-in-control motif and disorderly and strangely orderly disco-punk energy. It's on the gentler, lilting "Traffic Light" that the first quantum surprise of the record happens, but the positive energy of The Tings Tings never slopes. They are the opposite of introspection. And sure enough, before you know it you're back to the instantaneous funk licks and pouty pleasure of "Shut Up And Let Me Go" and "Keep Your Head".

PICCADILLY RECORDS – RECOMMENDED ALBUMS
(W/C 12/05/08)

Ass : Ass
Headspin

After half a decade of living room recordings whilst backing up the Swedish top list artists, versatile punk rocker and instrumentalist Andreas Söderström finished this his debut record as Ass (Andreas Soderstrom Solo) in 2006. This modernistic debut is a mainly instrumental folktronic journey into a soundscape of multilayers performed entirely by Andreas himself. Self tutored amongst the jungle of strings in his father's bouzouki factory, Andreas is a familiar bearded face in the Swedish alternative music scene. Over the past years Andreas has played bass with multi-awarded pop princess Jenny Wilson, trumpet and lapsteel with the internationally renowned electronica project Tape, and harmonium, key harp and guitar with the folk project Blood Music.

Myspace: www.myspace.com/assmyass

Ass : My Get Up And Go Just Got Up And Went
Headspin / Static Caravan

Ass is the work of Andreas Soderstrom. Soderstrom plays all of the instruments found on this quietly intoxicating 10 track record, the follow up to his astonishingly assured, eponymous debut – both released on Headspin Recordings. It finds him hacking through the folk undergrowth, his fluid dynamic underpinning a stark melancholy which simmers throughout. From the Britfolk fingerpicking of "I've Been Here" to the austere "Cool Water", the self taught multi instrumentalist wrings a plaintive beauty from his fingers; penning profoundly moving, largely non vocal entities, augmented at various points by electronic gurgles, horns and an accordion. Channelling a hypnotic style which is at times reminiscent of folk legends such as Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and John Fahey, his crisp compositions nevertheless have an ultra modernist edge to them, digital elements seeping through and sounding perfectly at home, but with a softly engaging feel rather than the clinical hum of technology. "My Get Up And Go Just Got Up And Went" is that rare kind of record; bewitching and thought provoking, comforting and challenging. It's a real treat, and a chance to hear the whispered charm of a subtly disarming performer.

Bon Iver : For Emma, Forever Ago
4AD

Big, big news from across the pond, this is already shaping up to be THE album of the year. Bon Iver (pronounced: bohn eevair; French for 'good winter' and spelled wrong on purpose) is a greeting, a celebration and a sentiment. It is a new statement of an artist moving on and establishing the groundwork for a lasting career. "For Emma, Forever Ago" is the debut of this lineage of songs. As a whole, the record is entirely cohesive throughout and remains centred around a particular aesthetic, prompted by the time and place for which it was recorded. Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, seems to have tested his boundaries to the maximum, and in doing so has managed to break free from any pre-cursing or finished forms. It wasn't planned. The goal was to hibernate. Vernon moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter. He lived there alone for three months, filling his days with wood splitting and other chores around the land. This solitary time slowly began feeding a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. The days slowly evolved into nights filled with twelve-hour recording blocks, breaking only for trips on the tractor into the pines to saw and haul firewood, or for frozen sunrises high up a deer stand. All of his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss and guilt that had been stock piled over the course of the past six years, was suddenly purged into the form of song.

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan : Sunday At Devil Dirt
V2

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan return with their sublime second album together - "Sunday at Devil Dirt" - the follow-up to the critically-acclaimed "Ballad of the Broken Seas" which received a mercury nomination in 2006. The album title gives an indication of the music within. While continuing to mine the same rich seam of alt-country, folk and blues of their debut, the new record also embraces a more dusty southern gothic. A sultry, jazzy feel is evident alongside the influence of Tom Waits on a number of tracks. As with their first album, it has been written, produced and arranged by Isobel Campbell, with Lanegan providing lead vocal duties.

Cut Copy : In Ghost Colours
Modular

Following recent single "Lights & Music", Aussie electroclashers Cut Copy deliver their second long player. Produced by Tim Goldsworthy, DFA's inhouse producer, programming guru, and all round synth mogul, "In Ghost Colours" is a great follow up to 2005's "Bright Like Neon Love". Haunted with machines of the past and sounds of the future, Cut Copy inhabit the kind of space in time where trends are irrelevant and music is about feeling rather than following and 1969 is just as relevant as 2020. At once electronic and organic, Cut Copy have crafted a record filled with glorious sounds and moods that brims with unashamedly pop hooks.

Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip : Angles
Sunday Best

Blasting out of nowhere with their zeitgeist-hitting list song "Thou Shalt Always Kill" in 2007, Dan Le Sac (music) Vs. Scroobius Pip (rapping) now bring us a whole long player. The duo take influences from US spoken word hip hop labels like Anticon (check "Look For The Woman" for a very Why? style cut), while coming across more like an electroid Mike Skinner (but with lyrics about the periodic table, rather than coming up on yer Es). In the end they sound like no-one else but themselves, making music that is totally now. It's an indie-hip hop-electroclash collision!

Myspace: www.myspace.com/lesacvspi

Neil Diamond : Home Before Dark
Columbia Records

Collaborating once again with legendary producer Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Tom Petty), "Home Before Dark" is a vivid 12 track masterclass in compelling songwriting and the follow up to 2005's highly acclaimed "12 Songs". "Home Before Dark" features twelve original songs written by Neil Diamond and was recorded in Los Angeles with guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboardist Benmont Tench (from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), along with bassist/acoustic guitarist Smokey Hormel and guitarist Matt Sweeney. Highlights on the album are many, including the stunning lead single "Pretty Amazing Grace" and a striking duet with the Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines on "Another Day (That Time Forgot)".

Joey Negro And The Sunburst Band : Moving With The Shakers
Z Records

Joey Negro And The Sunburst Band are back with another solid album, featuring a ragbag delight of boogie, disco, funk and jazz, all played live by a full band and string section, channeling the spirit of classic 70s disco orchestras or Soul Weekender classics. Collaborators include Harlem soul legend Leroy Burgess, Diane Charlemagne (of Goldie's "Inner City Life" fame) and Taka Boom (Chaka Khan's sister dontcha know), as well as Elektrons frontman Pete Simpson. It's just one big uplifting sing-along, dance-along party jam!

Myspace: www.myspace.com/thesunburstband

Matmos : Supreme Balloon
Matador

"Supreme Balloon" finds the dynamic duo of M C Schmidt and Drew Daniel taking a holiday from conceptual responsibility, skipping the outré sampling antics in favour of a lighthearted 'cosmic pop' record made entirely out of synthesizers. That's right, no household objects played in a percussive manner, no snails or blood or amplified semen, no acoustic instruments, no voices of famous people for five seconds, not even any half-way cheating with Vocoders, just synthesizers of all shapes, sizes, eras and nationalities being snipped, folded and reshuffled by an arsenal of samplers and computers into colourful sound-origami. Gear fetishists take note: the exotic and antiquated synths used on the record heavily spotlight the classic 60s/70s/80s consumer electronic rigs of Arp, Korg, Roland, Waldorf and Moog, and feature modular systems from Electro-Comp, Doepfer and Akai (hell, even a stylophone and a Suzuki Omnichord show up). But there are also completely unique, one-of-a-kind modular curios present, such as the "Coupigny" modular synthesizer housed in the INA/GRM studios at Radio France in Paris and used extensively by some of the titans of musique-concrete.

Myspace: www.myspace.com/matmos1

PlantLife : Time Traveller
Rapster

Jack Splash and Panda One return with "Time Traveller", the second PlantLife album and follow-up to the massive "The Return Of Jack Splash" set in 2004 (#1 in Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Winners LP chart for that year). It's an album that continues to bring together the best of 70s soul, funk and rock, 80s electro freak out, 90s b-boy politics and 2008s futuristic nu-soul ideals.

The Shortwave Set : Replica Sun Machine
Wall Of Sound

Last summer The Shortwave Set's Andrew Pettit, David Farrell and Ulrika Bjorsne decamped from South East London to California minus a record deal or any funding to speak of with only their self-belief and the ton of goodwill generated by their much-loved debut "The Debt Collection" for company. At the invitation of Danger Mouse, the trio went to work in Los Angeles last June, where they wasted no time in availing themselves of the string arranging talents of Van Dyke Parks (legendary Beach Boys collaborator) and the distinctive soundscapes and atmospherics of The Velvet Underground's John Cale. The resulting album "Replica Sun Machine" is a psychedelic pop adventure, where acid-bright sunshine casts eerie shadows and illuminates uncomfortable truths. It's an impossible-to-get-out-off-your-head trip, like a European Flaming Lips inspired by the baroque pop of the Left Banke, the cinematic scope of Serge Gainsbourg and the discomforting drama of Nico's solo albums.

Ursula Minor : Laudanum
The Foreign Office

"Laudanum" is the debut mini-album by acclaimed Scottish four-piece, Ursula Minor. On "Laudanum", Mary-chain-esque guitars swim and collide with waves of electronica, a digitised heartbeat brings Krautrock screaming into the modern age, and dark whispers are woven into the lining of it all. Through the harsh, brooding squall of "Laudanum" to the loose, rolling melodies of "Past Two Weeks", this mini-album is an aural snapshot of that sound, brought to you for the first time by The Foreign Office. Exploring similar territory as the likes of My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3, they create beauty through white noise and find precise patterns in chaos. The release of their debut "Laudanum" will introduce a new audience to their world of reverb, where Neu! always program the percussion, Stockhausen picked up a guitar, and "Raw Power"-era Stooges were producers. Fantastic stuff, highly recommended!!!!

Virgin Passages : Distance
Fire

Virgin Passages create beautifully original soundscapes from often improvised pieces but retain a pop sensibility akin to early Mercury Rev, Spacemen 3 and Jackie O Motherfucker. Following the collection of early recordings on "Mandalay", "Distance" sees them in great pop form with the short and sweet title track followed by a meandering Stereolab-alike anthem of "This Is Not The End Of The World Again" and the neu-folk, subtly sublime "Who Do You Love".

LIVE GIG REVIEW: YACHT / HEALTH - CHARLIE'S, MANCHESTER - 03/05/08

Kicking off the proceedings with a whirlwind of energy is YACHT. Electro-pop alias of Portland based artist, and former member of The Blow, Jona Bechtolt. YACHT specialise in glitch laptop pop, overlaid with a droll deadpan vocal. This is party music for the achingly hip indie contingent.

The performance amounted to Bechtolt singing over a pre-recorded backing track and dancing as if no one was watching. This was much more entertaining than it sounds. Bechtolt was accompanied by his Girlfriend (Claire L. Evans) and the show is completely about their extreme charisma and enthusiasm. The duo threw vocals back and forth as they cavorted fearlessly amongst the hyped up crowd. It was infectious, and by the end of the set the indie audience had lost the affected cool and wide smiles and dance moves prevailed.

Health equally matched Yacht for enthusiasm and energy, despite this being personified in a totally different way. Health are a Los Angeles noise band utilising drums, synths, guitars and a massive array of pedals to create havoc. Opening with 'Lost Time' the band instantly grabbed the room's attention with sheer volume. The song swelled into a percussive cacophony engulfing the audience. From the moment they started the crowd was treated to a relentless sonic assault. This was an incredibly physical performance, with the drummer on the stage and the other three members at crowd level. The band spent the entire set in a hyper-kinetic state, flaying limbs lost in a world of their own creation. This alienated feel was heightened, as there was no banter with the crowd at all. Even the vocals were inconsequential, lost in a sea of noise.

The band does share traits with other avant-noise groups, think Gang Gang Dance or Liars (Drums not Dead era). However, they do differ from their contemporaries. Whereas other groups use noise to create large droning soundscapes, Health keep their songs short and sweet. Yes, the songs are loud and heavy, but they're concise and instant. Inconceivably, they've made noise accessible and pop.

SUMMARY

4/5

It was like Yacht threw a great sugar rush of a party. Health gatecrashed, broke vases, vomited on the carpet then touched up your sister. Awesome fun.

PICCADILLY RECORDS – RECOMMENDED ALBUMS
(W/C 05/05/08)

Atlas Sound : Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel
4AD

Atlas Sound is the solo moniker of Deerhunter frontman / provocateur Bradford Cox. Here on his debut album, Cox's sound moves out of dank nightclubs filled with eternal existential drone punk, and relaxes at home in his Grant Park, Atlanta bedroom. And this is, essentially, a bedroom album, a collage, mixing the garage rock and ambient electronic influences previously explored with Deerhunter into a new context, with newly explored recording techniques, mainly laptop-based, learned with guidance from Kranky artist Nudge's Brian Foote. The result is fourteen songs of melancholy and mania. This is a true solo album, entirely created and produced by a single person. That is certainly not unique, especially in the contemporary scene. But Bradford Cox's unusual talent is the ability to take a wide variety of seemingly incongruous sound elements, and seamlessly meld them into a cohesive pop narrative. Ultimately it is this innate ability to combine all these disparate elements into a singular whole that makes this album such an enjoyable, and unique listen.

The Draytones : Up In My Head
1965 Records

Debut album, following 2007's "Forever On" mini-album, from Anglo-Argentinian indie tykes. Rejecting the angular sounds of the 80s revival in favour of a more retro, poppier guitar style, they furrow the rudimentary, mildly psychedelic garage pop lineage, heavily influenced by the Beatles and the Kinks.

Familjen : Det Snurrar I Min Skalle
Telle

According to the Telle Records crew, Familjen is the next big thing to come out of Norway, following in the footsteps of Royksopp, Annie, The Knife, Lindstrom and Prins Thomas, Kleerup and Robin. Familjen is the solo electronic music project of Stockholm-based Johan T Karlsson, who writes all the music and lyrics, plays all instruments, sings and produces. Live he is joined by fellow electronic artist Andreas Tilliander, playing machines. Johan started of hanging out in local studio Señorita in Hässleholm, becoming something of a house producer, recording all sorts of music just because he could. "Det Snurrar I Min Skalle" features a great selection of catchy electrohouse tracks with more 80s influenced post-punk electro-dance sounds.

Fleet Foxes : Sun Giant
Bella Union

Fleet Foxes are wonderful, in both senses of the word: they are breathtaking musically, but they also give the impression that they are filled with wonder about the world and successfully convey that sense of wonder to the listener. Drawing on a variety of influences - gospel, hymns, folk, motown, baroque pop - Fleet Foxes have fashioned the most uniquely beautiful sound you'll hear this year.

No Age : Nouns
Sub Pop

No Age issued a slew of singles on a variety of indie labels in 2007, resulting in the tellingly cohesive compendium, "Weirdo Rippers" on Fat Cat Records later that year. That widely heralded release inspired such mainstream press as The New Yorker and the L.A. Times to feature the band's ties to the underground scene surrounding the Los Angeles all-ages club The Smell. Recorded by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound in Los Angeles from October to December of 2007, "Nouns", the band's Sub Pop debut, is succinctly all-encompassing, from the faux-simplicity of the title to the beautiful distortion of its sound. The record opens with a symphony of noise (both Dean and Randy use samples alongside their main instruments) and sometimes creeps, sometimes smashes through a sonic headlock befitting "Daydream Nation"-era Sonic Youth, Kiwi pop, My Bloody Valentine, and experimental noise.

Sian Alice Group : 59.59
The Social Registry

As work began on London-based Sian Alice Group debut full length "59.59", it became clear early on that it would not simply be a collection of songs. The music that they have brought to bare is a much more fully realized experience that moves through traditional pop songwriting and dynamic instrumental composition while being tempered with studio improvisation. The title of the record comes from its running time and, as this suggests, "59.59" manipulates elements of texture, pacing and timbre as if it's one sweeping composition. It is an epic record that showcases the talent, range and ambition of this young group, taking in elements of various genres and making them their own. At a time when the musical landscape seems inundated with derivative retrogressive guitar bands, or acts reliant on sequenced beats and oscillator knobs, Sian Alice Group's more classical inclinations show their willingness to tread their own path.

Tokyo Police Club : Elephant Shell
Mempis Industries

"Elephant Shell" lands roughly a year and half after the "A Lesson In Crime" EP and barely three years on from the band's 2005 formation. David Monks, lead singer/bassist, described "A Lesson in Crime" at the time of release as 'wide-eyed post-punk with a tendency to get over excited' - "Elephant Shell" is built on the same rapid-fire foundations of their previous work but is now built high with corridors of soaring sonic invention. The opening one-two rapid-fire salvo of "Centennial" and "In A Cave" barely evaporates before "Graves" and "Juno" pack innumerable hooks and "what-does-that-remind-me-of" glimmers into taut 2-minute-and-change frameworks, while "Tessellate" and "Sixties Remake" encapsulate everything great about the manic Tokyo Police Club live experience: soaring guitar signatures and keyboard figures, driving backbeats and irresistible sing-along's abound. Elsewhere, "The Harrowing Adventures Of..." and the dubbed out standout "Listen To The Math" find our young protagonists stretching out, hinting at a new-found maturity, ably adapting their energy into more subdued structures before the rousing coda of "The Baskervilles" brings the record to a shuddering halt.

The Wave Pictures : Instant Coffee Baby
Moshi Moshi

Producing seductively shabby love songs, with unsurpassed dexterity and an authenticity born out of obscurity, The Wave Pictures deliver their debut album "Instant Coffee Baby" on Moshi Moshi. With lead singer David Tattersall and bass player Franic Rozycki growing up in Wymeswold near Loughborough, the roots of The Wave Pictures lie far from the scene centric commerciality of the prevailing mainstream. "Instant Coffee Baby" is an album so lyrically of its time it should be placed in the Blue Peter time capsule, and yet it's production is timeless, it's touchstones myriad (Jonathan Richman, The Smiths, The Go-betweens, Violent Femmes) and the performances little short of virtuoso.

Willard Grant Conspiracy : Pilgrim Road
Loose

In fine Willard Grant Conspiracy tradition, "Pilgrim Road" is the result of chance meetings, online transatlantic collaborations, the input of dozens of musicians and recording and songwriting sessions the world over. Overseeing the whole process was the driving force behind the band, one Robert Fisher. Fisher's journey along the "Pilgrim Road" first began back in 2003 when he met Malcolm Lindsay after a particularly harrowing show at Glasgow's Barfly. At the time Fisher was completely unaware that Lindsay was carving himself out a niche as one of Scotland's most promising composers. Nonetheless, Lindsay's offer to put together string or orchestral arrangements for any future compositions intrigued him. The result of such a fortuitous liaison will tick all the right boxes for the devoted and draw in the uninitiated, as Lyndsay's evocative arrangements bring a subtle yet dramatic maturity to the party while the band's soul searching 4am vibe recalls Tom Waits at his "Asylum"-era best. This transatlantic meeting of minds between Fisher and Lindsay may well result in "Pilgrim Road" being hailed as a west-coast classic, albeit one that derives from the western coasts of two very different countries.

LIVE GIG REVIEW: JAMIE LIDELL - ACADEMY 3, MANCHESTER - 01/05/08

So, who exactly is Jamie Lidell? That’s actually a pretty tough question. Originally part of the techno duo Super Collider at the beginning of the noughties he then signed to the electronica label Warp where he released his debut solo album ‘Mudlin Gear’. Largely just electronic noise it came as somewhat of a surprise to hear his sophomore offering ‘Multiply’ in the summer of 2005. Gone in large parts were his electronic offerings and these had been replaced by soul, funk, R&B and dashes of break-beat. Becoming a (unlikely) British cult soul star comparisons were made to both Prince and Marvin Gaye spliced with the modernity of Beck. Taking head of the critical acclaim his third album ‘Jim’ was released in April 2008 and with a heavy inclination towards classic soul and R&B the tag of the new Jamiroquai inevitably followed.

With such an eclectic history you’d expect something groundbreaking to be performed in front of a musically aware crowd. It would seem though, that a recent playlist on Radio 2 has diluted the sell-out audience. Couples waited expectantly for their new soul hero and taking to the stage dressed in a sharp blue suit he didn’t disappoint. Opening up with ‘Another Day’ he blended gospel with soul and the crowd loved it and clapped along. Now this reviewer loves all the genres previously mentioned. But having been a fan of Lidell for a few years was disappointed by this newfound conformity and appeal to the mass-market crowd. Performing with a full backing band (reminiscent of The Dap Kings) there was no doubting musical ability; however, it was when Lidell nodded towards his past that things began to get more interesting. As an interlude, the band left the stage and Jamie was finally there on his own terms to entertain the venue. Layering his own vocals over pre-programmed beats a deep house vibe was achieved and adeptly turning this into a crowd sing-a-long with the track ‘A Little Bit More’ showed us the artistic relevance of blurring boundaries between genres. ‘This is when it was just me and my broken machines!!’ he shouted with unrestrained schoolboy excitement. You couldn’t help feel this was where he was the happiest. Still, it was all about the balance and the band returned to the stage to lead us into the encore with the funk/rock rumblings of the latest single ‘Little Bit Of Feel Good’ before wrapping things up with a high intensity version of ‘Multiply’.

Now let’s get this straight. Despite this reviewers misgivings there can be no doubt this was a good gig performed in front of an appreciative audience. However, at times, pastiche was the only way to describe it.

Mr Lidell, we don’t need a new Jamiroquai or a male version of Winehouse.

We need you - Jamie Lidell.

SUMMARY

3/5

An entertaining gig from a great live performer.
